Increasing Cultural Participation

The arts belong to everyone.

- Lila Acheson-Wallace

This simple statement conveys a belief that those of us who work in the arts and cultural sector share: that the arts benefit individuals, communities, and the economy as a whole. And that all of these benefits, both public and private, start with an individual encounter with a work of art. A clear need exists to increase these individual encounters to ensure continued benefit and healthy organizations.

We live in a time when there are more and more competing alternatives for people’s leisure hours, and increasingly fewer opportunities for contributions from foundations and corporations. Increasing Cultural Participation is a two-day workshop designed to help you cultivate demand and build appreciation for your programs and activities.

Increasing Cultural Participation focuses on a customer-centered decision-making model that helps identify potential audience members' level of inclination and potential barriers to participation in cultural programs and activities. We discuss methods to undertake and understand market research, to improve marketing efforts, and to use technology to inspire the creation of high-quality, effective methods to broaden, deepen, and diversify the audiences participating in your programming.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Improve organizational understanding and internal capacity
  • Analyze the community and external context in which their organizations operate
  • Segment and target audiences in order to articulate specific participation objectives
  • Evaluate and measure successes and failures

A large segment of the workshop experience is participant teams’ creation of a plan to build audiences. Drawing on the collective knowledge of peers and members of MCC staff, each team will get feedback and ideas to further develop plans to build audiences once back in the office.

The date of the next seminar is to be announced.
