Acton Public Schools, Acton

Project: For in-depth professional development over two years for sixth grade teachers on object-based learning, cross-cultural comparison, and archaeological science, focusing on China, Egypt, Indus Valley, Maya, Mesopotamia, Neolithic, Greece, and Rome.

Amherst-Pelham Regional Schools, Amherst
Grant: $17,950
Project: To design and implement elementary and high school-level poetry curricula that build sequentially on the existing middle school curriculum on Emily Dickinson. Under the guidance of the Emily Dickinson Museum and the Western Massachusetts Writing Project, 24 teachers will participate in professional development seminars, curriculum design and development led by teacher mentors, and ongoing study groups as they implement the curricula in their classrooms.

Assabet Valley Alternative High School, Marlborough
Grant: $9,695
Project: To support a 16-week residency of two-hour community-based art classes at the Worcester Center for Crafts for students with emotional disabilities and psychiatric disorders. Students will learn how to create and use art to express emotions, reduce stress, and manage psychiatric symptoms. In June, a culminating art show will highlight student work for families, staff, and the community.

Berkshire Arts & Technology Charter School, Adams
Grant: $7,500
Project: To support improvement of student literacy and writing skills through a school-wide project that integrates the arts and digital media with English Language Arts. Working with multiple teaching artists, students will focus on storytelling and creating narratives, turning those stories into digital media projects and a documentary. Outcomes will include a "virtual museum" created by students, and a multimedia exhibition at Greylock Arts in Adams, MA.

Boston Arts Academy, Boston
Grant: $4,500
Project: To support the expansion of Creative Teaching Partner Pell Osborn's residencies with 11th grade math classes to include 10th grade chemistry classes. The residencies help students understand complex math and science concepts through the art of animation. Information about the residency will be disseminated at the BAA Summer Institute to other middle and high school teachers from Boston Public Schools and other districts.

Boston Day & Evening Academy, Roxbury
Grant: $7,500
Project: To support a 22-week residency with artist Nora Valdez to work with 20 students on a sculpture installation project that will enhance the school's existing sculpture garden. The residency will engages students in discussion about memory and the power of transformation through education. Project results will include the creation of sculptures that represent the students' memories and their ability to shape their world.

Boston Latin School, Boston
Grant: $6,000
Project: To provide 10 master classes for Boston Latin School music faculty (open to all Boston Public School music faculty) and 40 hours of student master classes with two professional ensembles from Young Audiences of Massachusetts. In year one, band faculty and students will work with the North Winds ensemble; in year two, string faculty and students will work with the New England String Ensemble Quartet, culminating in four student and professional performances each year. The program seeks to improve the quality of teaching and encourage and improve small student ensembles and chamber music groups.

Cambridge Public Schools, Cambridge
Grant: $21,400
Project: To support professional development, individual consultation, and co-teaching with Underground Railway Theater’s teaching artists that will provide teachers with curriculum on play reading and writing that can be used across subject areas. The program will contribute to students’ literacy and high-level thinking skills and deepen their understanding of drama as a literary genre. Funding will support expansion of the district’s current Creative Schools program from five to twelve schools, thus reaching all K-8 schools in the district.

Joseph Case Junior High School, Swansea
Grant: $7,500
Project: To support the creation of a permanent tile mural celebrating the Portuguese heritage and culture of the Swansea community. Working with ceramics artist Amy Shusser, 180 sixth-grade students will explore Portuguese culture and design their own individual tiles. The project expands the European studies portion of sixth grade History and Social Science curriculum. Currently there is no art program for sixth grade students.

Champion Charter School, Brockton
Grant: $7,500
Project: To support the continuation of the enterART program in
collaboration with the Fuller Craft Museum. Students participate in 20 hands-on printmaking, bookmaking, and sculpture workshops per year and receive training in museum outreach and tours. The program encourages student self-discovery, expression, and cultivation of technical and cognitive skills by expanding students' artistic skills.

Charlestown High School, Charlestown
Grant: $6,000
Project: To support collaboration with the Actors’ Shakespeare Project (ASP) and the Boston Arts Academy (BAA) to establish a theater arts program at Charlestown High School. ASP will also provide professional development in teaching dramatic literature and using performance as an instructional tool for the 12-member English Language Arts department and other Theater and ELA teachers from the Boston Public Schools. The project will culminate in year two with a shared performance of Othello by CHS and the BAA.

Codman Academy Charter School, Dorchester
Grant: $7,500
Project: To support continuation of a partnership that integrates Codman students into the life of the Huntington Theatre. Students benefit from hands-on experience with all elements of theatrical production throughout the academic year. The Huntington's diverse programs support Codman's humanities curriculum and strengthen students' literary comprehension, analytical skills, public speaking, and self-confidence. Residency days at the Huntington include workshops with resident and visiting artists, play analysis or scene work, improvisation and scene performance, and journal writing.

Crosby Elementary School, Pittsfield
Grant: $7,500
Project: To support teacher collaboration with the Berkshire Museum's education staff that will strengthen teaching and learning in history, social science, math, and language arts for grades 2-5. Funding will support expansion of the school’s current Creative Schools program to serve an additional grade. Project activities include professional development, curriculum planning, museum visits, and museum-led classroom sessions.

Project: To support a residency with MCC Creative Teaching Partner Tribal Rhythms that will provide experiences for 4th graders in a variety of arts media. The project is designed to improve learning, increase appreciation of cultural differences, and improve teaching strategies to include English Language Learners in the general classroom.

Dracut Senior High School, Dracut
Grant: $7,310
Project: To support broadening the artistic sphere of Dracut High School students by allowing them to interact with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. BSO musicians will instruct 150 band and orchestra members during five sessions over the school year. The project will culminate with a concert featuring members of the BSO.

East Somerville Community School, Somerville
Grant: $7,500
Project: To support an artist residency with muralist David Fichter for 400 students in Grades 3-8 to document the oral and visual history of the school and its neighborhood. This history will be interpreted in a 40' x 20' mural to be installed on the exterior of the school. The project will engage students, their families, local residents, and business owners in the painting of the mural.

The Education Cooperative, Dedham
Grant: $20,705
Project: To support professional development for middle school teachers from eight school districts in the use of drawing and journaling in Art, Science, and English Language Arts. The project’s goal is to develop teacher and student observation skills. Teachers and students will work with local artists and naturalists and focus on the Charles River.

Project: To support development and implementation of a district-wide interdisciplinary curriculum for 4th grade that uses music and visual art to teach math. Cross-disciplinary teams of teachers in four schools will work with MCC Creative Teaching Partner Nancy Jackson to design and implement curriculum in their classrooms.

Gateway Regional Middle School, Huntington

Project: To support an 8-week after-school playwriting program with the Gateway Playwriting Project. Students will be partnered with theatre professionals to write a play that is professionally produced and performed for the public. Students will learn about characterization, plot, and setting, while developing imagination and ability to bring a project from inception to completion.

Project: To support a partnership with the Fuller Craft Museum that brings working artists to the school to teach six visual art courses. Project: To support a 6-week residency with the SeriousPlay! Theatre Ensemble. 11th and 12th grade International Baccalaureate students will be introduced to the history, philosophy, methodology, and techniques of physical theater. The program also will expose teachers to an alternative method of teaching theater arts.

Holyoke Public Schools, Holyoke
Grant: $22,200
Project: To support professional development with the Hitchcock Center for the Environment and the Enchanted Circle Theater to help 5th grade teachers attain a deeper understanding of the scientific inquiry process and how to teach it. The project includes a residency for all 5th grade students that will illuminate the scientific inquiry process and take learning outdoors. Funding extends the district’s current Creative Schools project that integrates science and theater arts.

Project: To support an integrated residency with MCC Creative Teaching Partner Nick Kachulis for all 7th grade students. Art, music, dance, drama, technology, and research will be employed to teach Ancient Greek mythology, history, and culture. The program culminates in a student showcase.

Madison Park High School, Roxbury

Project: To support professional development in digital art and communication design for the school’s art teachers provided by a Massachusetts College of Art & Design teaching artist. Together, teachers and the teaching artist will design and implement curricula which will be made available to all Boston Public Schools high school art teachers through a new website. The teaching artist will also conduct a two-year residency that builds on an existing partnership with the college intended to prepare students for college.

Marlborough Middle School, Marlborough

Project: To support an interdisciplinary 5th grade unit of study on early American art that incorporates Social Studies, English Language Arts, and Visual Art. Through professional development for teachers, an artist/historian residency for all art classes, art-making, and a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, each student will become knowledgeable about an early American piece of art of his or her choice from the museum’s collection.

Martha's Vineyard Regional High School, Oak Bluffs
Grant: $16,050
Project: To support continuation of the districts’ Creative Schools collaborative with the Martha’s Vineyard Historical Society. Teachers will complete the K-12 curriculum on the island’s history using materials from the museum’s extensive collection. Resulting multidisciplinary student work will be exhibited through an on-line Martha’s Vineyard “History Map” that identifies important points of historical interest interpreted by students.

Project: To support enhancement of 3rd and 4th grade curriculum in English Language Arts, Science, and Art through a nature journal writing program developed and implemented with MCC Creative Teaching Partner Clare Walker Leslie. Students will visit the Mass Audubon Visual Arts Center in Canton, the Wellesley College greenhouse, and the Davis Museum under Leslie’s guidance.

Project: To support a 19-day archaeology and science residency with MCC Creative Teaching Partner Kimberly Connors-Hughes. Seventh-grade students will develop investigative and critical thinking skills by participating in a mock archaeological dig. A professional development component for teachers will focus on object-based learning, cross-cultural comparison, and archaeological science.

Monument Mountain Regional High School, Great Barrington
Grant: $7,500
Project: To support collaboration with Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival that will use dance, choreography, and the creative inquiry process to address school-wide issues. Four artist residencies will help students to improve their critical thinking skills, develop social skills, enhance physical agility, and deepen creative abilities. Six professional development workshops for teachers will allow them to use creative movement as a teaching, communication, and problem solving tool.

Project: To support a 10-session Shakespeare & Company residency for each 5th grade class that will connect with the Arts and English Language Arts curriculum. Students and teachers will explore Shakespeare’s language, themes, and characters in Romeo and Juliet. The project will culminate in a student performance of the play for the public.

Natick High School, Natick
Grant: $7,500
Project: To support the development of a cross-curricular unit of study that will broaden student understanding of the connections between the scientific principles of physics and the creative process of sculpture. MCC Creative Teaching Partner Heidi Caswell-Zander will work with teachers from the science and arts departments to design the curriculum and engage students in creating functional scale models of kinetic sculpture, one of which will be created and placed on the school’s grounds.

Project: To support an ongoing partnership with Kidspace at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the Williams College Museum of Art, and the Sterling & Francine Clark Art Institute. The project also includes 5-day visual arts residencies with Kidspace exhibiting artists and writing residencies connected to the museum exhibitions.

Project: To support 6-day storytelling residencies for grades preK - 5 with teaching artist John Porcino. Student work will culminate in performances for other classes, neighboring elementary schools, parents, and the community.

Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion School, Amherst

Project: To support a professional development program provided by the Springfield Museums for grade 1 - 2 English Language Arts and Chinese Language Arts teachers. Teacher training will focus on integration of art and culture into the curriculum. Funding will also support a 5-day residency designed to incorporate a bookmaking project into the permanent grade 1 - 2 English Language Arts and Chinese Language Arts curriculum.

The residencies will culminate in a festival celebrating student work.

Project: To support a five-day residency for 2nd grade students that will use the arts of puppet making and dramatic performance to enhance students’ understanding of foreign cultures. Students will research a country of their choice and work with Behind The Mask Theatre to create a performance for the district’s annual International Fair. The residency includes professional development for elementary teachers on the use of performance arts to support student learning across the curriculum.

Project: To support professional development by a digital photographer that will increase secondary school art teachers’ skills and knowledge in that art form. Together, teachers and artist will develop and implement a sequential curriculum in digital photography for middle and high school students.

Project: To support professional development for classroom teachers focusing on music to teach 3rd grade history, 4th grade writing, and 5th grade science. Activities are designed to strengthen student learning and understanding. A five-day music residency for 3rd - 5th grade students will culminate in student performances (year one) and a celebration of the many cultural roots of the students and teachers (year two.)

Project: To support professional development and curriculum development for 4th and 5th grade classroom and visual art teachers in creative, experiential science teaching and learning. EcoTarium educators and school visual art teachers will collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate the arts into the science curriculum. The project is a partnership initiative of three Expanded Learning Time schools and is intended to serve as a model for replication within the district.
