Understanding
the New Health Care Law
In April of 2006, the Massachusetts Legislature enacted the Health
Care Reform Law, landmark legislation to provide health insurance
for nearly every man, woman and child in the Commonwealth. The Health
Care Reform Law affects everyone. All Massachusetts residents over
18 years of age are required to have health insurance by December
31, 2007.
The new health care system is a significant change with potential
benefits for artists and arts-related employers alike. However, to
navigate the new system successfully, it is important for you to take
initiative and the time to educate yourself about the new requirements.
The Legislature's Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development
has joined with the Arts Health Care Coalition (Massachusetts
Cultural Council; Massachusetts
Advocates for the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities(MAASH);
the Artists
Foundation and ArtistLink
) to help artists and organizations understand the implications of
the Health Care Reform Law.
The Arts Health Care Coalition has created a web site to assist individuals
and organizations in navigating their options under the new health
care law. Please visit www.artshealthcarecoalition.org.
