|Salem Jazz & Soul Festival | Salem | 2013
The 5th Annual Salem Jazz and Soul Festival (SJSF) honored the area's vibrant jazz scene dating back to the 1920s when greats like Duke Ellington used to play at the Salem Willows. With strong community support, the festival is reviving its jazz history by offering a series of free concerts to the public. Artists presented during the two day festival in August are nationally, regionally, and locally recognized. Additionally, the Berklee College/Derby Square Concert Series features students and faculty from Boston's venerable Berklee College of Music. Since its inception, SJSF has raised nearly $25,000 for local music education programs and student scholarships, and is currently working with teachers to identify and seek funds for areas of critical need in the classroom.
