SPIT-IT Youth Producers and Film Screenings  |  Worcester  |  2016

SPIT-IT! (Storytelling Project Incorporating Technology 4 Ideological Transformation) is an afterschool program to create documentaries addressing the social reality of urban youth of color. It involves teaching youth technical film-making skills and helping them document their stories and the stories of their community as counter-narratives to dominant images of urban youth. In 2015, they conceived, wrote, and produced the film Black Beauty, which follows a group of high school students who set out to uncover how and why our world values lighter complexions over darker skin tones. Their journey explores the power of the media, family, and friends in shaping young people’s identities.

Funded by the Worcester Arts Council in 2016
Grant Recipient: N-CITE, $5,000
