About the Facility: Founded in 1812, American Antiquarian Society is a national research library that makes its comprehensive collection of early Americana accessible to the general public as well as to researchers, serving 9,000 visitors annually. The facilities include the 1910 Antiquarian Hall, the Goddard Daniels House, and offices at its Regent Street house.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded the American Antiquarian Society $293,000 to renovate and reconfigure the Regent Street residence that is currently used as administrative offices to provide housing for visiting fellows. As part of the project, a historic porch that was previously removed will be replaced, restoring the character of the building.

About the Facility: Apple Tree Arts is a community school for the arts that provides high quality music and theatre arts programming to individuals located in the Blackstone and Assabet Valleys.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Apple Tree Arts $250,000 to restore the historic Grafton Town House's second and third floors, which will serve as the organization's base of operations and provide a venue for community performances.

About the Facility: The City of Worcester is currently undertaking the revitalization of Institute Park, a community resource located at the headwaters of the Blackstone River Corridor. The park hosts summer concerts and civic gatherings attended by thousands of residents from Worcester and surrounding towns.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded the City of Worcester $63,000 to construct a small performance gazebo which will serve as a venue for a variety of outdoor performances and festivals.

Energy Efficiency Improvements
Grant: $51,917

About the Facility: EcoTarium is one of the country's oldest natural history organizations, and offers indoor and outdoor exhibits, planetarium shows and educational programs. Since 1971, the facilities have been powered by a co-generation plant which was leading technology 37 years ago but today has become dated and unreliable.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded $51,917 to help EcoTarium complete a two-phase plan to update and replace its heating and energy systems. This project will help the organization reduce the operating costs of its 60,000-square-feet facility.

About the Facility: In 2003, the Fitchburg Historical Society purchased the distinctive late 19th century Phoenix Building. The building needs a number of improvements to enable its adaptive reuse by the Society, including accessibility and fire suppression upgrades.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Fitchburg Historical Society $106,800 for phase one of a two-phase project to allow occupancy in the Phoenix Building. Phase one will consist of the construction of an elevator and staircase to allow for greater accessibility.

Fire Suppression System
Grant: $47,000

About the Facility: In 2003, the Fitchburg Historical Society purchased the distinctive late 19th-century Phoenix Building. A fire suppression system is necessary for the Society to obtain an occupancy permit for its new home.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded the Fitchburg Historical Society $47,000 to design and install a fire alarm and fire suppression system in the Phoenix Building.

 

Fruitlands Museum, Inc., HarvardFruitlands Museum
Roof Repairs and Improved Accessibility
Grant: $73,000

About the Facility: Fruitlands is a museum dedicated to the heritage, nature, and art of New England. Located on the site of a short-lived utopian community established in 1843, the campus includes several historic structures and collections of Native American artifacts, Hudson River School landscape paintings, 19th-century vernacular portraits, textiles, and documents.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Fruitlands Museum $73,000 to replace the roof of the art gallery and to increase overall accessibility. The work will include repaving the museum's driveway and handicapped parking spaces, as well as renovating the art gallery's entryway to improve accessibility.

Grant: $79,000

About the Facility: The Groton Historical Society is a museum that collects, preserves, and displays objects, records, and folklore of historic significance from the Town of Groton's past. The museum is located in the Governor George S. Boutwell House, constructed in 1855 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded the Groton Historical Society $79,000 to increase the energy efficiency of the Boutwell House by installing new windows and doors and converting from oil to natural gas heat. The work also includes the installation of a new fire suppression system and foundation repairs.

Grant: $675,000

About the Facility: Originally built in 1904, the 66,000-sq.-ft. Poli Palace Theatre has undergone a number of transformations: It was updated in 1925 by theatre architect Thomas Lamb, converted in 1967 to a 4-cinema movie theatre, and eventually closed in the mid 1990s, falling into disrepair.

About the Project: In 2002, Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts was formed to restore the Poli Palace Theatre and transform it into a modern 2,300-seat performing arts center that will host concerts, Broadway tours, family shows, and performances by local arts organizations. The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded $675,000 for the project.

About the Facility: Originally built in 1904 to house the Poli Palace Theatre, the 66,000-square-foot space was restored to become the Hanover Theatre, which opened in 2008 as a state-of-the-art performing arts center. The organization was recently offered the opportunity to receive and install an historic Mighty Wurlitzer organ, which includes 34 sets of pipes put together from more than 20 discarded theater organs.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Hanover Theatre $62,000 for renovations including the installation of a lift to accommodate additional top-tier seating, restoration of a private reception space, and installation of a Wurlitzer organ.

Grant: $280,000

About the Facility: The John Woodman Higgins Armory Museum has an extensive collection of international arms and armor, which is housed in one of the earliest examples of steel frame and glass curtain architecture in the country. The collection is threatened by a lack of stability in some of the Museum building's steel beams.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded John Woodman Higgins Armory $280,000 toward the stabilization of steel beams and the painting and glazing of the museum's exterior.

About the Facility: Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra offers concerts and presents lectures and other civic functions from the historic Tuckerman Hall, a 12,000-sq-ft, 550-seat hall built in 1898. Despite a series of renovations to Tuckerman Hall, the backstage area is still too small to meet all program needs.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra $41,000 for architectural and engineering drawings, plans and specifications to build a 2,600+ square foot wing addition to Tuckerman Hall. This expansion will create much-needed backstage space for performers and provide handicapped access to the stage.

About the Facility: Old Sturbridge Village is a living history and resource center that interprets the first 50 years of the new nation, from 1790 to 1840. The Village is situated on more than 200 acres and consists of more than 100 buildings and 59 historic structures, some of which require urgent maintenance and repairs.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Old Sturbridge Village $135,000 to address maintenance of several buildings throughout the Village, including roof repairs, structural repairs, siding, painting, and prep work.

About the Facility: Old Sturbridge Village is the largest outdoor history museum in the Northeast, with 59 original buildings brought to the museum site from towns throughout New England. The collections, exhibits, and programs present the story of everyday life in a small New England town from 1790 to 1840.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Old Sturbridge Village $125,000 to address the maintenance needs of various buildings and structures, including roof replacement, carpentry repairs, interior and exterior painting, and HVAC upgrades.

About the Facility: In 1986, the Worcester County Horticultural Society opened Tower Hill Botanic Garden, a 132-acre site that offers educational programs and tours of its extensive gardens, parks, and greenhouses. Tower Hill has a 50-year master plan for the development of its facilities.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded $675,000 for phase four of Tower Hill Botanic Garden's master plan, which includes renovations and new construction to complete the Quadrangle--a complex containing a visitor center, restaurant, a new greenhouse and other structures.

Theater and Museum Improvements

About the Facility: ValleyCAST! operates out of the historic Whitin Mill campus, which includes a theater, meeting space, and retail space; the historic Brick Mill, which houses galleries and affordable housing; and the Museum of Industrial Heritage. While the primary construction was complete in 2006, the theater and museum require a number of improvements in order to be professionally equipped venues.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded ValleyCAST! $160,000 for renovations to Whitin Mill site buildings including theater lighting improvements, installation of assistive listening equipment, and museum climate control improvements to protect displays.

About the Facility: The second largest art museum in New England, the Worcester Art Museum complex covers one city block and includes the original 1898 building and several subsequent additions from the past century. Accessibility improvements will focus on the Higgins Education Wing, which covers 25% of the total square footage and includes studios, classrooms, storage, exhibition and office space.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded $310,000 to the Worcester Art Museum for renovation of an existing studio into a 130-seat public lecture hall, construction of a new barrier-free entrance, and upgrades to the existing Museum Cafe.

About the Facility: In 1986, the Worcester County Horticultural Society opened Tower Hill Botanic Garden, a 132-acre site that offers educational programs and tours of its extensive gardens, parks, and greenhouses. Tower Hill has a 50-year master plan for the development of its facilities.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Worcester County Horticultural Society $89,000 for the construction of the Container Court, an exhibit designed for individuals with physical disabilities. The project will also include the replacement of surrounding pathways to make the area more accessible.

About the Facility: Worcester County Mechanics Association is a non-profit that strives to preserve Mechanics Hall, America's finest pre-Civil War concert hall. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Mechanics Hall is a surviving testament to the craftsmanship and prosperity of Worcester's industrial roots.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Worcester County Mechanics Association $75,000 to restore the 1864 E. & G.G. Hook Brothers tracker organ and replace 1,000 theater chairs.

About the Facility: Agassiz Baldwin Community (ABC) is dedicated to the cultural vitality of the local community, and also reaches thousands annually through exhibitions at its Sacramento Street Gallery. ABC's main building is a recently-restored early Victorian house, which is too small to accommodate the visual arts programming the organization would like to provide.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Agassiz Baldwin Community $400,000 for the construction the Maud Morgan Visual Arts Center. The project will transform a dilapidated carriage house behind ABC's main building into exhibition and reception space, as well as four visual art studios for students and practicing artists.

About the Facility: Founded in 1979, the American Repertory Theater works to expand the boundaries of theater, and presents its programs at the 550-seat Loeb Drama Center (built in 1960) and the flexible 300-seat OBERON (opened as the Zero Arrow Theater in 2005). The addition of a second venue has increased the need for A.R.T. to both coordinate its box office efforts and update equipment in the original theater.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded American Repertory Theater $169,000 for the purchase of a new ticketing system and the reconfiguration of existing box office space, and for upgrades of lighting and projection equipment at the Loeb Drama Center.

About the Facility: ArtsBoston sells half-price tickets and provides arts information at two BosTix booths located at Copley Place and Faneuil Hall. While the Copley Place booth was built in 1994, construction of the Faneuil Hall booth was completed in 1979; the Faneuil Hall booth has had no substantial renovation since its opening.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded ArtsBoston $180,000 for the first major renovation of ArtsBoston's Faneuil Hall BosTix booth. The project will involve updating the exterior of the booth, reconfiguring the interior to improve workflow, and adding external signage and lighting.

About the Facility: The world's largest independent music college, Berklee College of Music began planning two years ago to develop a café venue that would offer burgeoning musical talent the opportunity to perform in a public setting. The result was Café 939, a 4,000-square-foot space that includes a café and a flexible live performance space that seats 50 to 200 people.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Berklee College of Music $200,000 to support the transformation of a former architect's studio in Boston's Back Bay into Café 939, which includes a coffehouse and performance venue.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Boston Ballet $45,000 to repair the 12,500 square-foot roof and to address additional weatherization issues.

About the Facility: Occupying a historic city block in Boston's South End, the Boston Center for the Arts houses below-market studio, performance, and exhibition space for working artists and arts organizations. The Center has completed four years of research on prioritizing the capital needs of its expansive facilities.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded the Boston Center for the Arts $386,000 for repairs to the Cyclorama and Tremont Estates Building, including electrical system updates, stairway and elevator upgrades, roof repair, and updates to the sprinkler system.

About the Facility: Occupying a historic city block in Boston's South End, the Boston Center for the Arts houses below-market studio, performance and exhibition space for working artists and arts organizations. It is currently addressing the deferred and future maintenance needs of its 130-year-old buildings.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Boston Center for the Arts $400,000 for the replacement of heating and HVAC systems and the redesign of the organization's historic outdoor plaza.

About the Facility: The Boston Conservatory presents more than 250 free and low-cost performances annually, mostly from its Main Stage on Hemenway Street. Built in 1949 and expanded in 1958, the theater building has a number of limitations; the Main Stage theater has little wing space and no orchestra pit, and the dance studios are inadequate in size.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Boston Conservatory $675,000 for a major facilities initiative, including extensive renovations to the Conservatory's existing 350-seat theater; and the construction of new studios, performance space and an orchestra rehearsal hall.

Adaptive Re-Use of the Egleston Square Power Station
Grant: $518,400

About the Facility: The former MBTA electrical power station in Egleston Square, Roxbury, is the new headquarters of Boston Neighborhood Network Television. Built in 1909, the historic building once supplied power to the elevated train, but had fallen into disrepair after the train was relocated in 1986. BNN renovated this unique building in 2007 as part of its campaign to revitalize the neighborhood.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Boston Neighborhood Network Television $518,400 for the historic preservation and adaptive reuse of the former Egleston Square MBTA power station into a cultural center.

 

Boston Parks & Recreation Department, BostonCopp's Hill Burying Ground
Copp's Hill Burying Ground Restoration Work
Grant: $73,000

About the Facility: The Historic Burying Grounds Initiative (HBGI) is a public/private cooperative program established within the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. It focuses on the comprehensive restoration, on-going conservation, and heritage interpretation of Boston's sixteen historic burying grounds, including Copp's Hill Burying Ground. Copp's Hill, which dates from 1659, is a popular tourist destination located on the Freedom Trail.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded the Boston Parks & Recreation Department $73,000 for restoration work at Copp's Hill Burying Ground. The project includes the restoration of historic cast-iron fences and a cast-iron well, as well as accompanying masonry work.

About the Facility: Symphony Hall is the home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops. The hall was originally built in 1900 and is often studied as an acoustic model for new concert halls. In 1999, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Boston Symphony Orchestra $250,000 for the preservation and restoration of the exterior of Symphony Hall. The work includes replacing portions of the roof and repointing the facade.

About the Facility: Symphony Hall is the home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops. The hall was originally built in 1900 and is often studied as an acoustic model for new concert halls. Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1999, Symphony Hall has had regular maintenance but no significant renovation of its interior spaces.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Boston Symphony Orchestra $675,000 to help with the extensive renovations planned for Symphony Hall's auditorium and other interior public spaces. The work will help to restore the historic appearance of the auditorium and improve audience accessibility.

 

Boston University Concert Hall, Boston
Accessibility and Acoustics Improvements
Grant: $400,000

About the Facility: The Concert Hall at Boston University has a unique history: built in 1919, the hall was designed originally to house an automobile showroom, which was the purpose it served until becoming vacant in the 1940s. The university acquired the building in the 1950s and converted it into the concert hall that stands today; however, the building still faces challenges with acoustics and accessibility.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Boston University $400,000 for renovations to its concert hall, including a raised roof to improve acoustics, a new handicapped seating area, a new HVAC system, and other interior renovation work.

About the Facility: Built in 1713, the Old State House is the oldest public building in Boston; a national, state and local landmark; and a major destination on the Freedom Trail.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded The Boston Society $254,400 to complete the structural stabilization of the Old State House, including restoration and sealing of its tower, repair and enhancement of its HVAC system and accessibility improvements.

About the Facility: Founded in 1978, the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center presents visual and performing arts programs by ethnically and culturally diverse artists. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Center is located in Bullfinch Square and consists of an ornate theater, two art galleries and support spaces.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center $45,664 for renovations and upgrades to the Center's theater that will include seating, lighting, staging, and acoustical upgrades.

About the Facility: The Cambridge Center for Adult Education is a community education center providing high-quality public programming to 20,000 participants annually. The center is housed in the Dexter Pratt House, built in 1811, and the William Brattle House, built in 1727. Both houses are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund granted the Cambridge Center for Adult Education $250,000 for fire protection, emergency lighting, plumbing, electrical, window repairs, energy efficiency, and accessibility upgrades at the Dexter Pratt House and the William Brattle House.

About the Facility: Cambridge Community Television is a nationally recognized community media center that provides training and access to media production tools for Cambridge residents, businesses, and organizations. The organization undertook the construction of a new facility that is nearing completion.

About the Project: The Cultural Facility Fund awarded Cambridge Community Television $250,000 to complete the finishing touches on CCTV's new home. The work includes the installation of an ADA compliant elevator, acoustic treatments, lighting systems, and an HVAC system.

About the Facility: Central Square Theater is the new permanent venue for two Cambridge theater companies, the Nora Theatre Company and Underground Railway Theater. Although the black-box theater and rehearsal spaces are state-of-the-art in their design and fit-out, the facility is set back from the street, creating challenges to the theater's goal of increasing its visibility.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded $68,000 for exterior improvements to Central Square Theater, including new signage and exterior courtyard work to increase the theater's presence on Massachusetts Ave. The grant will also go toward the installation of specialized equipment such as listening devices, audio description devices, and a captioning system.

About the Facility: The Nora Theatre Company and Underground Railway Theater have partnered to develop a new theater arts center, the Central Square Theater, on a long-vacant parcel of MIT-owned land.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Central Square Theater $192,000 toward the completion of the new theater facility.

Grant: $675,000

About the Facility: The Boston Children's Museum is one of the country's oldest children's museums, and also one of the largest. Located in a six-story converted warehouse on Fort Point Channel, the Museum facility has a number of space and layout challenges that their ongoing, extensive capital project is addressing.

Up to now, a lack of a modern fire supression system has limited Gore Place from bringing in many traveling exhibitions.

About the Project: In July 2007, the Museum of Science launched its comprehensive four phase plan to renovate and expand its building. The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded $675,000 for projects in phase one, including renovations to the Mugar Omni Theater's exterior and lobby, and infrastructure upgrades to the Hayden Planetarium.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded the New England Historic Genealogical Society $125,000 to construct a Conservation Lab within its Newbury Street facility. The newly refurbished theater re-opened its doors in October 2008 after renovations to the stage floor, orchestra, and major renovations to the backstage and utilities spaces.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Amazing Things Arts Center $218,000 for the second phase of a project to restore and adapt a firehouse in downtown Framingham into a music, theater, art, and family events center. The Center's new home will include a professionally-equipped theater with more seats, classroom space, and exhibition space.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded $177,000 for Plimoth Plantation to convert from its current septic system to connect with the town's sewer system. Plimoth Plantation is limited by the current system--this project will enable the institution to accomodate more visitors.

About the Facility: Plimoth Plantation, located on Plymouth's historic waterfront, tells the complex and interwoven stories of English and Native cultures in an engaging and experiential outdoor and indoor learning environment. About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Plimoth Plantation $235,000 to renovate and expand the Craft Center to serve as the new hub of the museum experience. The work will improve guest amenities and add a hands-on exhibit area and period baking facilities.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded $370,000 to assist Plymouth Guild for the Arts in the acquisition and renovation of the Russell Library and The Lindens annex. The buildings will provide a combined 6,400 sq. ft. of gallery, performance and gathering space, open for use to local visual and performing arts groups.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded the Community Music School of Springfield $391,000 for the renovation of the 5,000-sq-foot atrium into a concert hall, including construction of staging, platforms and lighting; as well as parking facility improvements.

About the Facility: One of the largest Shakespeare performance centers in the country, Shakespeare & Co. sits on a 30-acre site that once housed a boarding school. Since 2000, Shakespeare & Co. has converted buildings on the site, creating the 428-seat Founders' Theatre, the 250-seat outdoor Rose Footprint Theatre, housing facilities, classroom space and support spaces.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Shakespeare & Co. $395,000 to support the renovation of a former sports center on campus, converting it into the Center for Arts and Humanities, which will include a multi-use 146-seat theater, rehearsal studios, classrooms and improved production space.

About the Facility: Founded in 1857, Springfield Museums comprises four museums dedicated to fine art, science, and regional history. The Museum is ready for Phase II of a project to add a fifth museum to the complex that is dedicated to Springfield's heritage, which will increase the space available for exhibits and programs and enhance accessibility.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded $307,000 to the Springfield Museums for the construction of a 12,000-square-foot addition to the Great Hall, including a handicapped accessible entrance, expanded visitor orientation area, new walkways, expanded collection storage, and landscaping improvements.

About the Facility: Founded in 1857, Springfield Museums comprises four museums dedicated to fine art, science, and regional history. One of these, the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum, has a collection that has outgrown its current facility.

About the Project: In the spring of 2006, Springfield Museums purchased an adjacent building to house a new Museum of Springfield History. The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded $675,000 for the renovation of the new building, which will present exhibits and educational programs that interpret Springfield history in the larger context of American history.

About the Facility: The G.W.V.S. Art Museum, built in 1895, is one of five of the Springfield Museums. Fashioned after an elegant Italian villa, the museum houses a fine collection of 19th-century Chinese, Japanese, and Middle Eastern art, as well as a selection of 19th-century American paintings.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded the Springfield Museums $250,000 for improvements to the G.W.V.S. Art Museum. The project includes the installation of climate modification and the repair of the museum's roof and skylights.

About the Facility: The Ventfort Hall Mansion is a 28,000 square-foot brick house that sits on 11.7 acres, and one of the few remaining Gilded Age "cottages" in the Berkshires of more than 75 built in the late 1800s. The mansion was slated for demolition in 1997, when Ventfort Hall Association purchased it and began work to repair the extensive damage brought on by years of neglect.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded $120,000 to help with the stabilization and restoration of the historic Ventfort Hall mansion's deteriorating exterior west brick wall and its second floor. This project will allow the Ventfort Hall Association to open up more of the mansion to visitors for public programming.

About the Facility: Designed and built in 1902, the Mount is the estate and gardens of Edith Wharton. In addition to being a historic site and center for culture, the Gilded Age mansion is also a National Trust for Historic Preservation landmark.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Edith Wharton Restoration $137,000 to replace and fully restore the roofs, cupolas, and chimneys of the Stables, the Mount's primary visitor center and programming space, and the Gatehouse, the year-round administrative office space.

About the Project: The Cultural Facilities Fund awarded Wistariahurst Museum $414,000 for construction that will rehabilitate and make the Wistariahurst Carriage House accessible for increased use, including structural work on the interior to create an exhibit space, meeting space, and climate-controlled archives.
