Creative Transitions
Integrating Arts Into the Juvenile Justice System

In 2005, a statewide task force was formed in Massachusetts to integrate the arts throughout the Commonwealth’s juvenile justice system. This coalition believed that arts programs have the potential to produce an array of positive experiences and outcomes for young people in Department of Youth Services (DYS) facilities.

In the spring and summer of 2008, the Creative Transitions demonstration project was launched by DYS, the Massachusetts Cultural Council and Collaborative for Educational Services. Creative Transitions developed and tested tools, protocols, approaches, and relationships that could support integrating arts and cultural opportunities within a number of DYS programs across the state.

Brandeis University's Center for Youth and Communities has released the results of an evaluation of Creative Transitions, conducted over six months in 2008. The report calls Creative Transitions "an effective way that youth could manage their emotions and expand their horizons."
